 LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1. The new alternatives to ankle arthrodesis. 2. Learn about the conditions that may need ankle arthrodesis, or a prosthesis or an allograft. 3.Radiologic findings of complications of the post operative ankle.

 ABSTRACT

Ankle arthrodesis has been the mainstay treatment of the arthritic and posttraumatic ankle joint. However, in recent times a new generation of ankle prosthesis have come into use and ankle allograft surgery is becoming an alternative treatment option for articular cartilage defects. While there is much discussion in the orthopedic surgery literature, there is a paucity of description of these new and exciting techniques and treatments in the radiology literature. This presentation will first briefly review the conditions under which patients might have to undergo ankle surgery which will necessitate ankle fusion or a prosthesis or an allograft, followed by a discussion of the post operative ankle in each of these cases. Conventional radiography continues to be the mainstay of radiologic follow up although computed tomography may be used under some circumstances. The goal of this presentation is to familiarize the viewer with the normal postoperative ankle and the various possible complications that can arise.
