 LEARNING OBJECTIVES

The goal of this exhibit is to educate imaging specialists and interventionalists about the novel therapeutic options in the treatment of symptomatic uterine fibroids and to inevitably provide a tailored treatment plan for each woman.

 ABSTRACT

Uterine fibroids affect 20-40% of pre-menopausal women who suffer from a variety of symptoms including metrorrhagia, menorrhagia, dyspareunia, pelvic pain/pressure and infertility. Short term use of hormonal therapy may decrease symptoms, but hysterectomy remains the most widespread definitive treatment for uterine fibroids. Hysterectomy and myomectomy can be complicated by large amounts of blood loss, requiring transfusions. Recently, a variety of minimally invasive techniques have been developed to treat uterine leiomyomas, including uterine artery embolization and thermal ablation ie, cryotherapy, high intensity focused ultrasound, and radiofrequency ablation. We will discuss the current clinical and surgical management of uterine leiomyomas and provide an evidence-based review of emerging treatment options. The goal is to educate imaging specialists and interventionalists about the novel techniques adding to the armamentarium in the treatment of symptomatic uterine fibroids.
