This newsletter has two main goals: to help committee members stay informed about the RSNA Technical Exhibition and committee responsibilities and to help the committee improve commercial exhibits at future RSNA meetings.
Responsibilities of the Committee on Technical Exhibits
The Technical Exhibition at the RSNA is monitored on a continuing basis by a team of professional floor managers whose activities are coordinated by the Director: Technical Exhibits. These floor managers are each assigned responsibility for a portion of the exhibit hall where they (1) assist exhibitors during set up and dismantle; and (2) monitor compliance with RSNA Exhibitor Rules and Regulations during set up and exhibition hours.
Floor managers are to be assisted by the Technical Exhibits Committee Chairman, the members of the national Technical Exhibits Committee and the members of the Local Committee on Technical Exhibits. These volunteers are able to evaluate the appropriateness of exhibits and demonstrations from a medical perspective, which a layperson is unable to do.
Committee responsibilities:
To be familiar with RSNA rules and regulations for technical exhibitors.
To make a tour of the assigned technical exhibit area during each scheduled four-hour period monitoring and reporting any violation to the exhibit help center staff.
To monitor housekeeping and safety of the exhibit floor and report any negligence.
Report violations and negligence directly to the Technical Exhibits Committee Chairman or the Director: Technical Exhibits for enforcement. Committee members should not approach exhibitors directly.
To evaluate general attitudes, traffic patterns, concerns or interests of exhibitors as well as those of professional registrants.
To be familiar with the product information systems and to monitor their importance and effectiveness to the registrants.

Technical Exhibits Chairman Report 2004(2005 report to be published this Spring)
Participation by technical exhibitors at the RSNA annual meeting remained very strong despite a weakened world economy and international travel concerns.
The RSNA Technical Exhibition was ranked #1 among medical trade shows in the United States and Canada, according to an April 2004 report in Tradeshow Week. Among all trade shows, the RSNA Technical Exhibition was ranked #38.
Technical exhibit space for RSNA 2004 was higher than for 2003 and set a new record. A total of 690 companies and medical organizations displayed and demonstrated a variety of products and services in 455,050 square feet of exhibit space in Halls A and B of McCormick Place. These included 134 first-time exhibitors. Firms from as far away as Sweden, Argentina and China traveled to Chicago to participate. The diverse selection of exhibiting companies included large multi-imaging equipment vendors, film and image management firms, medical publishers and small companies offering only one product.
The RSNA Mobile Computing Pavilion made its debut at RSNA 2003 and was featured on the exhibition floor at this year’s meeting. Located in Hall A, the Pavilion presentation theater featured industry experts and leaders in the field where they discussed wireless technology and its impact on healthcare.
In the Lakeside Center facility, vendors conducted Hands-on Computer Workshops in classroom settings while others continued their involvement with RSNA in year six of the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) initiative.
Communications among the Technical Exhibits Committee, exhibiting companies and RSNA staff remained strong throughout the year. Discussions with exhibitors at planning meetings held in March and June helped RSNA to improve its meeting operations and make adjustments to benefit our members and the radiology market.
From these discussions, we transformed the Technical Exhibitor Profile/Listings from a print version to a totally electronic one. Exhibitors then had the chance to self-administer their company description and customize the look and feel of the information via the World Wide Web. It made it easier and more efficient for exhibiting companies to modify and make updates to their entire company description as compared with the process from past years. Onsite, we again positioned Exhibitor Registration adjacent to the Technical Exhibits floor. This allowed those who only wished to obtain a one-day only Technical Exhibits badge to do so quicker and easier.
The application process for companies seeking exhibit space at RSNA 2004 remained the same as in years past. New exhibitor applications were reviewed by the Technical Exhibits Committee chairman and the RSNA staff. Only products and services directly related to the teaching or practice of radiology are eligible for exhibit space.
As I end my fifth year as chairman, I would like to extend a thank you to all members of the Technical Exhibits Committee for their hard work throughout this past year, as well as during a very busy and exciting annual meeting. The challenge of the chair position was facilitated by the support of committee members at the local level as well as the national level. The RSNA staff is the model of professionalism and makes it easy to be a volunteer.
